Michigan: $575 grant for Hopkins SADDThe Hopkins High School chapter of SADD attended 2003 Student Leadership Services 18th Annual High School Michigan Statewide Leadership Conference, thanks to a $575 grant from Citizen's Insurance Company of America.
The first-ever Citizens Insurance Development Grant Program, a partnership with Student Leadership Services Inc. (SLS) was recently created to support contributing clubs, chapters and groups in Michigan with program needs. The Nov. 98-10 conference was a student-led event. Hopkins students had a chance to connect with hundreds of peers from high schools throughout Michigan, attend workshops and listen to nationally known speakers.
"We are a new group with a lot to learn, but we have some exceptional students who are excited to make a difference in the Hopkins community," said advisor Cassie Krause. She said students lead the group; she is "the guide on the side."
SADD used to stand for Students Against Drunk Drivers; the name has been changed to Students Against Destructive Decisions, Krause said. While drunk driving is still one of the main issues, the focus is also on other behaviors like illegal drug use and safe driving in general.
At the conference students also held a memorial ceremony for student Shelly Helwigg, who died in a fatal crash Oct. 30. Drug Rehab by County
